Supporting Research & Development

The following research, development and investigation initiatives demonstrate the ingenuity and expertise of our Western Australian personnel that is strengthening ABR efforts to roll out this eco-friendly and economic refurbishment technology into Australia on a commercial basis for the first time.

M ABR research

ABR have conducted a survey and investigation into the adverse consequences of battery recycling when a battery is scrapped and materials returned for remanufacture into new batteries. The investigation calculated the following energy requirements and emissions typically created by manufacture of a brand new 51 kilo type N200 cranking battery:-

•Energy required to manufacture – equivalent of 8 gallons gasoline burned;

•Emission of 65 kilos of Carbon Dioxide – contributing to global warming

•Cold Venting of Sulphur Dioxide – creation of 83 tonnes of acid rain (by definition)

This should convince Australians that battery refurbishment must be an imperative and a first choice ahead of the current widespread accepted practice for scrapping and recycling our lead acid batteries. Recycling lead acid batteries is bad for the Earth.
Heat is the enemy of the lead acid battery, particularly above 40°C . Operational discharge and charging in hot ambient temperatures accelerates early failure of lead acid batteries due to accelerated corrosion and chemical activity. ABR have engineered a cool habitat enclosure to charge batteries during such hot weather periods. This includes conditioned air flow sufficient to evacuate and dilute hydrogen gas emitted during charging and yet maintain a cool atmosphere for charging to be carried out safely.
ABR are designing and developing a mobile trailer facility to provide complete refurbishment services at remote locations for charging and testing of batteries from offshore locations such as lighthouses and navigation aids, and for shipping, particularly Defense vessels, that can be temporarily located at coastal locations and at shipyards for around the clock 24/7 refurbishment campaigns.
ABR supports and is providing promotional battery refurbishment on sporting merchandise to youth Rugby and AFL in Joondalup and Muchea with the slogan “I am Eco-Friendly”.
Findings in the report prepared by the Institute of Sustainable Futures identified that 162 kilo tonnes of lead acid batteries (>5kgs unit weight) were imported into Australia in 2013. ABR refurbishment cost model shows profitable operation when 40% of the RRP (Recommended Retail Price) for a new battery is levied. This affords a saving of 60% of the RRP to the battery user. The median sales price per kilo of a battery is around $8.0/kilo so the cost of >5kg batteries imported in 2013 is 1.2 billion dollars (162,000,000 kgs x $8.0). Adoption of battery refurbishment would drastically reduce such import costs and eliminate the irreversible environmental degradation caused by the current approach to scrap and recycle batteries after only one life cycle.
